This week, I've really "dug" the New Testament letters--probably because I've been spending so much time with teens and twenties.
While reading I Thessalonians, it crossed my mind that not too many people could be reading the Bible, because neither society nor the church really reflects this mandate:
"God's will is for you to be holy so stay away from sexual sin."
"God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives."
So, if you're like me, a "word" study on holiness might be a good refresher for reminding us how to live in a sex-crazed culture!
Be encouraged to live holy lives.

In my study of 1st Peter Be Holy is a command. 1:15 but just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for its is written "Be Holy because I am holy."
ReplyDeleteThis verse has been reverberating in my mind for the last 3 weeks, so I too, have been struck by the instructions in Thessalonians to live a Holy life. I don't think it is completely attainable but most definitely a command to strive for.
"But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. Thes 5:8 Pretty powerful
My prayer this morning is to confirm my trip to my mother's house and be protected while I am there. Did you catch the LOVE part?
Thess 5:12-13 I thought of Becky she works hard among us and gives us spiritual guidance. I know I can speak for all of us when I say we have great respect for her and a wholehearted love because of her work. Thank you Becky for taking on this work of LEADING us through reading the scriptures. You give us courage to move towards living a Holy life.
Robbie, asking God's special protection and peace on your time with you Mother.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, thank you Becky.
You have made such a huge change in my life with this (and all) groups. I'm so joyous that I get to carry this experience along with me every day.
We're sort of having a new take on prayer requests at Bible study this year. We're supposed to be focusing more on growth and not just needs. I found myself thinking, oh that's what I do in Becky's groups! Sure enough, yesterday my small group leader said it sounded like I had really thought things out in my life. Yup! Every week after our devotional calls. Small changes, big results.
Hope all are having a blessed weekend.

Hello, everyone! Working with lots of teenagers (and quite a few young teachers), I agree with Becky's comments. So many of my kids come from "families" that are almost non-existent or totally dysfunctional, and even the teachers--whom I always considered role models for young people--seem to have written their own "code of conduct." In our crazy, mixed-up world, all of us need the stability and promise of God's word, and if we can reflect a holy lifestyle, perhaps each of us can do a little bit to turn things around. I hope so, at least.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
1Thessalonians 4:1-5:3
ReplyDelete"God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you." 1 Thessalonians 4:-8
Called to live holy lives. This is only possible because Christ dwells in me. I need to grasp this and hang onto it because otherwise I feel like a failure. When I don’t spend time with God, it is easy to do life my own way. I see this with my children as well. Since my oldest has quit going to church on a weekly basis and stopped reading her Bible, she does life as the world tells her is ok to do life and to live with no regrets. It is easier to justify to yourself the sinful lifestyle when you do not read God’s word regularly or worship God. This isn't allowing Christ to live in me. Live a holy life!
