Did you know...?

This past week, both a New Testament and Old Testament verse popped out as I read them (for the 20th time, or so) as if I had never read them before!

Can you find the reference in I Corinthians -- someone in addition to Paul who wrote the letter?

And in Ezra, did you notice how, at the celebration of the rebuilt Temple there were mourners sobbing and others cheering -- at the same time?

Let me know if you find the name of the co-author and the exact verse of the crowd with mixed emotions.  Of course, if you come across something that strikes you for the first time as new or interesting, please share it with all of us!

Be encouraged (to read it, love it and live it!),

Becky

  1. I found it. Interesting!
Still have to go over the Ezra chapters for that verse.
And I have been using my template to record these sorts of things which I have maybe not seen before. I'll try to post some later, plus more Psalms.
Thanks Becky! Blogger is misbehaving again btw.

  2. Laura, I just wrote something I discovered this week that jumped off the page at me and it vanished. I will write later. No more time left. So I am having problems as well.

  4. Just finished listening to the recorded call tonight. I haven't yet gone back through the passages to complete the assignment, but I'm looking forward to it.

Becky, you mentioned finding something new or fresh each time we read passages that we have read many times before. Your comment made me think of a favorite chorus we sing sometimes at church. Based on a couple of verses from Lamentations 3, it is called "The Steadfast Love of the Lord Never Ceases." Are you familiar with it? The chorus says that God's "mercies are new every morning, new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness . . . ." Here is a link to a YouTube rendition of it.

    Enjoy!

  5. I haven't had time to listen to the recorded call, but I went back through to do the assignment and I knew right away what the verse was in Ezra, because that is the verse that I highlighted and journaled. It jumped out at me also. God has been showing up and letting me know he is hearing my prayers. I didn't notice the co-author for Corinthians until going back this morning. Thanks everyone for your posts they are encouraging. They help me stay on my walkk with God.

  6. Wanda, watched the u tube song. It took me back 35 years when we used to sing it. Love having those tunes in my head. I had a wonderful explosion last week while reading the bible. This is my 3rd attempt to blog about it. Each time I do, my thoughts are more condensed. I accidentally read July 7th instead of August 7th. It answered my question on how to deal with someone who has been lying to me. Psalm 5, said that God was my protector and shield. The person who said untruthful words God would take care of. It is moments like this that keep me reading God's word over and over again. Like Wanda said it is new every morning.

  7. Hi All: Sitting here trying to fathom the Sugarland concert stage collapse. Life can be so unpredictable.
Anyway, Wanda I love that chorus.

    Another 7/7.
    Blessings all.

  8. I prayed expectantly this morning, desperately needing the Lord's guidance. I woke with a heaviness; fear and worry were knocking at the back door. I was not going to let them in. Pour your Holy Spirit on me I prayed. Yesterday, I gave advice to a new mommy: Pray and God will supply you with everything you need. Lord, give me all I need today to parent my son who feels like the Israelites in Nehemiah.
Corinthians 9:23 Teach me Lord to do everything to spread the good news and share its blessing. (mother's care situation)
Becky, did you look ahead to see Psalm 34 would be the last 2 days of this week on Don't Fear? A rush of God's faithfulness came over me when I read vs 4 "I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears." Amen, Praise God!!
I guess that is from the other group, but it fit here. Sentence that I am going to take with me today. The Joy of the Lord is my strength.

  9. Robbie, I was grateful to see Psalm 34 this morning, too, and I marked both verse 4 and verse 7, "For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him" (different kind of fear, of course, when used in reference to God and his angels). I will keep you and your son in my prayers today.

I love the way you spoke of "fear and worry . . . knocking at the back door." I can sympathize, for I woke up from what seemed an endless and very convoluted "back to school" dream. (I always have strange dreams before we go back, but this one was particularly weird.) I think the weather contributed to the whole situation, for our area has been experiencing wild thunderstorms off and on all morning, with periods of extremely heavy rain. After the torrential rains of the weekend, I am praying that the power will not go off, for I don't want to deal with a flooded basement--a sure thing if the sump pump can't handle these downpours!

Last week I dealt with a major plumbing issue, then discovered my dryer vent was coming loose and spent an entire Saturday repairing it myself, only to discover that my phones were no longer working. After repeated attempts with my cell phone, I finally spoke with a real person at Verizon this morning. With the strike going on, the earliest date someone can come out to check the phones is next Monday, so I am relying on the Internet and my cell to get me through the week. Looking at the bright side, though, I will continue to be free from all those telemarketing calls for a whole week!

Today's reading from Psalm 34 ends with the assurance that "those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing." My plumbing problem is repaired, my dryer vent is still working, the cats are doing well, I have a job to return to tomorrow, and the sun is beginning to peak through the clouds, so I have much to be thankful for!

I wish for each of you sunny days and blessings to count!

  10. Hi All: In reading Neh. today I noted some phrases that so greatly describe God and His grace:
9:27 In great mercy You sent them deliverers
28 In Your wonderful mercy You rescued them repeatedy.
30 In Your love You were patient with them.
31 In Your great mercy You did not destroy them or abandon them.

Of course between all those verses lies a lot of bad behavior on the part of the people.
Praise God for His mercy and grace and compassion.

  11. 7/7 last week.

The verse that jumped out for me today is Psalm 34:18

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

    God knows.

Have a blessed week. I am leaving tomorrow to take our second child to college so will miss the call but will listen when I return on Sunday. I enjoyed reading everyone's posts and insights.

  12. Lorraine, that was the verse that I wrote down today as well. My daughters boss got fired last night and I thought of him with that verse this morning. He is a Godly man, who has been with this job for 20+ years.
    Have a safe trip.
