The Sadness of Sin

I think we forget, unless you read the entire story of David each year, just how costly his sin against Uriah was to his legacy.

For most of my Christian life, I've heard David preached as having a lovely life and strong reputation for loving God. Yet, when you read the "long version" over a few days of the ramifications of David's temptation turned deadly (the loss of Uriah's life and his son with Bathsheba, as well as the loss of his older sons), you begin to see a different picture.

David escaped with his life, but he lost his reputation. In fact, he hurt God's reputation and he lost the respect of his own sons.

When I reflect upon this story, I see nothing but...sadness for David and his family. Sin so very often creates pain for more than the one committing it.  And sometimes, it lasts our lifetime. Though we never lose God's love toward us, we can rewrite our story with sin.

Oh, that we would learn from David...

Be encouraged to read the Bible to learn!

  1. I was just thinking last night (and 7/7 again btw!), what a story. So much going on, so much to consider. The consequences of sin really do linger on.

  2. I also made note of how the sin affected not only David but his family in the future. My prodigal hasn't figured out how her sin affects me as her mother. But as my Pastor reminded me on Mother's Day. Don't stop praying and believing. God is bigger than sin!
